Founded by Adam, TRÄNE21 makes nostalgia its material.
In German, Träne means "tear." The umlaut crowning the A is no accident: it roots the name in an origin and gives it its signature. Yet the tear it speaks of has nothing to do with sadness. It speaks of everything that shapes us: emotions, hardships, memories.
From an idea to a brand
TRÄNE21 grew out of a wish long left in suspense: to make the clothes one would have wanted to wear oneself. Adam, its founder, had carried it since childhood. It became a brand the day he decided to make it real. The rest was built self-taught, at the pace of research, trials and mistakes. The brand still grows the same way.
Düsseldorf, kept close
Its founder now lives in France, but Germany remains the country closest to his heart, home to an important part of his life. TRÄNE21 draws from it a mood, a way of living, memories no other place gives back. Düsseldorf, above all, holds a place apart. A city, a period, a certain idea of freedom. TRÄNE21 does not claim to be German, though, and does not set out to depict the city. It is, rather, a way of carrying part of that place and that moment along. The name comes from there, and so does the umlaut. As for the 21, it stays personal: a birth day, and a long-standing bond with numbers.
Nostalgia, without sadness
Nostalgia is the feeling that runs through the whole brand. The one Adam says he holds onto most, and that can arise from almost anything: a place, a person, a sensation, a moment, distant or very recent, happy or harder to revisit. Nothing sad in it. Rather a way of keeping a link with what one has lived, of returning to it, of feeling it again, sometimes of understanding it better. TRÄNE21 came partly from this: giving a concrete form to memories and emotions, something one can wear.
Care for detail
Its world draws on streetwear, but the approach stays minimal. The brand favours simple pieces that keep a strong identity, without excess. Everything then plays out in the detail: the fabric, the cut, the drape, the print, the finish. Nothing is left to chance. A few t-shirts, some beanies: the wardrobe is still short, yet each piece keeps a trace. Which is exactly what the name promises. Keeping something with you.
