A dystopia is a world where society turns oppressive and freedoms narrow. That world, so often described in books and films, no longer feels far from reality to us. It is easy to feel confined by ways of thinking, living or creating imposed by everything around us.
We replaced the I in dystopia with a second Y. That shift stands for our opposition to those limits: not following exactly what is expected, bending the rules and making our own version.
It all started simply. We loved clothes without being able to afford the pieces the major labels were making, so we began customising our own. Our first real piece was a full outfit. Wearing it around our city brought reactions, and DYSTOPYE went from a personal urge to a brand.
Our imagination comes from daily life in Neuchâtel. A walk, a conversation, a situation or a single word can give rise to a piece or a collection. If one word had to remain behind everything we do, it would be cohesion. DYSTOPYE does not belong only to those who run it: a real part of Neuchâtel stands behind the project.
Our pieces look pared back at first glance, but they stand out through their details: embroidery on a sleeve, on a hood or across the back, a particular cut, a zip made in the shape of our logo. Quality remains essential. Before any graphics, the fabric, the cut, the comfort and the durability have to hold up. We know what it is to love clothes without always being able to afford them. That is why we look for the fairest price possible, and why we do not want to become a brand out of reach for the people who watched us grow.
